PLA Navy’s Type 22 Missile Boats Join Interception, Patrol Missions in South China Sea

The Chinese PLA Navy has deployed Type 22 fast attack missile boats to support interception and rights protection operations against foreign warships in the South China Sea. Originally designed for coastal defense, these 220-ton stealth catamarans are now being used to confront significantly larger U.S. warships weighing 8,000–9,000 tons.

Powered by waterjet propulsion, the Type 22 boats can reach speeds of up to 50 knots. They are armed with eight YJ-83 anti-ship missiles, a 30 mm cannon, and jamming flare systems. Their speed, agility, and low radar signature make them highly effective for littoral missions, including patrols, escort duties, and intercept operations.

The recent deployment reflects the platform’s growing role in China’s maritime strategy, with its compact yet potent firepower offering capabilities comparable to larger surface combatants.
