XRP ETFs: What Are They and What Is the Current Situation?
XRP ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) are exchange-traded funds that aim to replicate the performance of the digital asset XRP. The creation of a spot XRP ETF, similar to those approved for Bitcoin in the US, would allow investors to buy and sell shares of the fund on traditional stock exchanges, gaining exposure to the price of XRP without needing to buy and directly custody the cryptocurrency.
Currently (April 2025), there are still no approved spot XRP ETFs in major markets such as the United States. The main obstacle is the ongoing legal battle between Ripple Labs (the company associated with XRP) and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC claims that XRP is a security and that its initial sale was irregular. The approval of an ETF crucially depends on regulatory clarity regarding the status of XRP, which is likely to occur only after the conclusion of this legal case. Market expectations are high, as an ETF could facilitate access and potentially boost demand for XRP.
