Mihailo Tolotos was a Greek Orthodox monk who is said to have lived his entire 82 years without ever seeing a woman. Born around 1856, his mother passed away just four hours after his birth. With no known relatives to raise him, he was taken in by monks at a monastery on Mount Athos—a remote monastic community in Greece that has banned women and female animals since 1060 to help monks maintain celibacy and spiritual discipline.
Raised entirely within the monastery, Tolotos never left the sanctuary of Mount Athos. As a result, he grew up in total separation from women and was also untouched by many aspects of modern life—he never saw a car or an airplane. When he passed away in 1938, the monks gave him a special funeral, believing he may have been the only man to live and die without ever laying eyes on a woman.
Though some parts of his story are hard to confirm, Tolotos’s life stands out as a striking example of extreme isolation and unwavering religious commitment.
