#TariffsPause
In a surprising move aimed at easing global trade tensions, former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on new tariffs for countries that have not retaliated against the U.S. The announcement, made Wednesday afternoon via a post on X (formerly Twitter), marks a temporary softening of Trump's usual tough trade stance as negotiations pick up pace.
Trump said he approved the tariff pause after more than 75 countries reached out to U.S. officials — including representatives from the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) — showing a willingness to resolve ongoing disputes over trade barriers, tariffs, currency practices, and other trade issues.
Highlighting that these countries had refrained from retaliating, Trump declared a 90-day suspension of new tariffs and also introduced a lower "Reciprocal Tariff" rate of 10%, effective immediately during this negotiation period.
