Saylor was the CEO of MicroStrategy from 1989 to 2022. In 2000, Saylor was accused by the SEC of fraudulently reporting MicroStrategy's financial results for the two previous years. He subsequently reached a settlement with the SEC for $350,000 in fines and $8.3 million in personal refunds.

Saylor is a proponent of bitcoin and under his leadership MicroStrategy has spent billions of dollars to acquire over 500,000 bitcoins. In 2024, he paid a $40 million fine to settle a tax fraud lawsuit. He is the author of the 2012 book The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything. He is also the sole trustee of Saylor Academy, a provider of free online education.
