The private key to the Bitcoin genesis block is lost—or possibly never existed.
The very first block in the Bitcoin blockchain, called the Genesis Block (Block 0), was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto on January 3, 2009. Unlike other blocks, it contains a unique message:
“The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”—a timestamp and political statement.
But here’s the weird part: The 50 BTC reward from that block has never been spent, and due to how the Genesis Block was coded, it’s very likely that it can’t be spent. Some believe Satoshi deliberately made it unspendable as a symbolic gesture.
So, those 50 BTC are just sitting there—untouchable and eternal.
