Goldman Sachs raises economic recession forecast in America to 45%
7:20:38 April
Goldman Sachs has raised its forecast for the likelihood of an economic recession in the United States from 35 percent to 45 percent in the second increase within a week amid similar estimates from investment banks due to the escalating trade war.
Goldman Sachs raised its estimates from 20 percent to 35 percent at the beginning of last week amid fears that US tariffs would harm the global economy. Days later, President Donald Trump announced higher-than-expected tariffs, triggering a sell-off in global markets.
Since then, at least seven major investment banks have raised their recession risk forecasts, with JP Morgan estimating a 60 percent chance of an American and global recession due to tariffs and counter-tariffs.
Goldman Sachs yesterday, Sunday, lowered its forecast for US economic growth in 2025 from 1.5 percent to 1.3 percent, while JP Morgan predicts a contraction of 0.3 percent on a quarterly basis.
