According to BlockBeats, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Friday that he is negotiating with other countries to secure exemptions for California from retaliatory tariffs amid U.S. President Donald Trump's escalating trade war.
Newsom, considered a potential candidate for the 2028 U.S. presidential election, is striving to shield California from the adverse effects of these tariffs. In a video released on Friday, Newsom stated, "Donald Trump's tariffs do not represent all Americans. I have instructed the California government to explore new trade opportunities and remind global trade partners that California remains a stable partner."
He described California as "the backbone of the American economy" and emphasized the state's commitment to maintaining "stable trade relations" with the world.
On the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, Newsom wrote that California is "ready to engage with global trade partners." He further asserted that California is not afraid to leverage its market influence "to counter the largest tax increase our generation faces."
