• Studio Ghibli-inspired memecoins have surged in popularity.

  • Ghiblification (GHIBLI) reaching a $20 million market cap.

  • AI-generated images in Studio Ghibli style, enabled by OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o, flooding social media.

  • Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, has expressed strong disapproval of AI in art, calling it “an insult to life itself.”

  • Studio Ghibli has not yet commented publicly on the trend.

  • The memecoin market’s volatility poses risks for investors, with Ghiblification seeing a 39,010% price increase in days.

The digital landscape is witnessing a fascinating intersection of artificial intelligence, anime nostalgia, and decentralized finance. The trigger was OpenAI’s launch of image generation capabilities in its ChatGPT-4o model on March 25, 2025, which allowed users to create images mimicking the distinctive style of Studio Ghibli, known for films like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro.”

This feature, detailed in OpenAI’s announcement, has led to a viral trend on social media, with X posts from figures like Elon Musk and Sam Altman amplifying the phenomenon.

The Rise of Studio Ghibli Memecoins

This viral art trend has spilled over into the cryptocurrency market, with memecoins themed around Studio Ghibli gaining traction. Memecoins, speculative digital assets often driven by internet memes, have seen a new wave with Ghiblification (GHIBLI) leading the charge.

Pump.fun – $GHIBLI

According to Coindesk’s report, Ghiblification reached a market cap of $21 million, with a 24-hour trading volume of $70 million and 250,000 trades, primarily on Solana and Ethereum. Its liquidity pool holds $330,000 worth of Solana’s $SOL, reflecting strong market activity.

Another notable token, GhibliCZ, achieved a $14 million market cap on the BNB Chain, as per Binance Alpha’s listing. The trend has seen at least 20 other Ghibli-related memecoins emerge, with Ghiblification surging 39,010% since launch, trading at $0.02083.

Miyazaki’s Stance

However, this trend clashes with Hayao Miyazaki’s views. In a 2016 NHK documentary, he reacted strongly against AI-generated animation, calling it “an insult to life itself”. His concern is that AI cannot replicate the human emotion and experience essential for authentic art. This disapproval adds a layer of controversy, especially as AI-generated Ghibli-style images flood platforms, potentially exploiting the studio’s brand without consent.
