In 1992, two professors from Harvard University, Robert S. Kaplan and David Norton, conducted research on the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). They discovered that companies relying solely on financial metrics for management needed to manage more closely through more accurate measurement indicators to perform well.

After successful research, the BSC has helped thousands of businesses, government agencies, and many organizations worldwide, including Vietnam.

In 2011, in a global survey of the best management tools published by the consulting firm Bain, the BSC officially ranked 6th in the top 10 management tools being widely used around the world.
