Tutankhamun was a pharaoh of the XVIII dynasty of Egypt, who ruled from 1332 to 1323 BC. His reign was brief and not particularly notable in his time, but he became famous in 1922 when the archaeologist Howard Carter discovered his nearly intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
His tomb contained more than 5,000 valuable objects, including his iconic solid gold funerary mask, jewelry, statues, war chariots, and weapons. These treasures have helped historians better understand the culture and art of ancient Egypt.
Despite his wealth, the cause of his death remains a mystery, with theories ranging from diseases to a possible murder. His tomb is one of the most important in the history of archaeology.
