🛎 Indian authorities arrested 46-year-old Lithuanian Alexey Beshchokov, whom the United States considers one of the creators of the cryptocurrency exchange Garantex.
He was detained while on vacation in Varkala, Kerala.
The U.S. Department of Justice had previously charged Beshchokov and Russian Alexander Mira Serda (40 years old), calling them key figures of Garantex, which has been used since 2019 for laundering funds related to hacking attacks, ransoms, and drug trafficking. The exchange has been under U.S. sanctions since 2022 but has processed more than $60 billion since then.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies in Germany and Finland seized Garantex servers, and the U.S. froze $26 million related to its activities. Beshchokov will appear in court in Delhi on March 14. He faces up to 45 years in prison.
