I don't know how to read charts but I've always done well. My strategy is based on a very old saying:
"Everything that goes up like a palm comes down like a coconut."
Don't chase prices or go after the bottom, except to go against what people say. I always go for the highest prices. It doesn't mean that I don't lose, but the success rate is significant.
