Trump imposes 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and threatens 100% on Brazil
Doing the opposite of what liberalism preaches, the US president announced a tax increase.
Starting tomorrow, February 1, products from Canada and Mexico will become more expensive in the United States.
On Thursday night (30), President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on the two countries, listing the reasons that led to the decision. The main ones, according to him, are the number of immigrants that both countries bring to the US, the drugs that cross the borders and the “huge” subsidies that the US government gives to its two neighbors.
He also said that he is considering a 10% tariff on all Chinese products, citing its participation in the fentanyl trade.
In addition, Brazil has once again been the target of criticism from the US president. Trump threatened the BRICS member countries with 100% tariffs if the bloc continues with its plan to create its own currency to replace the dollar in trade within the group. And it is worth remembering that the Brazilian government is the one leading the debates on the use of the dollar in international negotiations.
“We will demand a commitment from these apparently hostile countries that they will not create a new currency or support any other currency to replace the mighty American dollar, otherwise they will face 100% tariffs and will have to say goodbye to selling to the wonderful American economy,” said Trump, adding that “they can go find another ‘sucker’.”
Trump's practices indicate that he will govern with protectionism, tax increases and restrictions on market freedom, contrary to the neoliberal precept.
“Do as I say, not as I do.”
