According to ChainCatcher, crypto KOL Hmm recently fell victim to social engineering fraud, losing $50,000. The fraudsters took control of the trader 'Brother Y's' WeChat account, impersonating him to initiate USDT transaction requests, leveraging trust within the group.
The scam has three characteristics: achieving pseudo-legitimate login through SMS hijacking or SIM card cloning, accurately mimicking the victim's social style, focusing on high-net-worth trading groups, and choosing early morning hours when cognitive abilities are weaker to commit the fraud.
Hmm pointed out that the attacks are escalating, with hackers using AI impersonation and Deepfake to enhance deception. Users are advised to remain vigilant about funding requests from acquaintances, enable WeChat device locks and SIM card locks, and use dedicated accounts for asset transactions.
