According to BlockBeats, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General Kanni Wignaraja has called for an exploration into how cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and stablecoins can drive human development. Wignaraja highlighted that Bitcoin and Ethereum reached a market capitalization peak of $3.9 trillion in December, suggesting that a portion of these funds could be allocated to support education, healthcare, skill development, and job creation. She emphasized the need for digital currencies to support development while ensuring financial stability. Wignaraja also recommended that development organizations test cryptocurrency funds under strict regulation. The transparency of blockchain technology, she noted, can enhance accountability and curb corruption. Additionally, she proposed that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) assist countries in establishing regulatory frameworks for CBDCs.
