According to Foresight News, Offchain Labs, the developer behind Arbitrum, has announced the implementation of the BoLD dispute resolution protocol on the Arbitrum One and Nova chains following governance approval. BoLD facilitates 'permissionless validation' within its Layer 2 ecosystem, enhancing decentralization and security by replacing previously whitelisted validators with a system open to anyone interested in network security.
Offchain Labs highlighted the complexities involved in verifying Optimistic Rollups over the years. Despite the presence of fraud proofs, the chains were theoretically vulnerable to denial-of-service attacks, where malicious validators could repeatedly delay withdrawals and state confirmations. BoLD modernizes the anti-fraud system used in Optimistic Rollups by introducing an interactive, time-bound dispute resolution mechanism. This ensures that disputes within the two Arbitrum ecosystem chains are resolved within approximately 12 days.
