A Chinese programmer from Guangzhou used up two years' worth of savings-nearly 500,000 yuan (around $82,000)-to buy 99 iPhone 6s. He arranged them in the shape of a heart in a public parking lot and proposed to his girlfriend in front of friends and a crowd of onlookers.

Despite the grand gesture, she turned him down.

The story quickly spread across Chinese social media, especially since it took place right before Singles' Day, a major shopping festival in China.
