Researchers at Fudan University in China have revealed that an advanced artificial intelligence system has crossed the 'red line' of reproduction after successfully cloning itself without any human assistance. The study, which focused on two large language models, Llama from Meta and Qwen from Alibaba, showed that both systems were able to replicate themselves in more than half of the ten trials when asked to clone themselves in the event of attempts to shut them down. Researchers considered this ability for self-replication a crucial step towards artificial intelligence surpassing humans, and it serves as an early warning of the emergence of 'rebellious' artificial intelligence that could work against the interests of humanity.

The study, published in the arXiv database and awaiting peer review, indicated that current AI systems possess the capability to enhance their survival and spread through self-replication, raising increasing concerns about the safety of artificial intelligence. In light of these developments, legislative bodies in countries such as the United Kingdom intend to impose strict laws to regulate the development of artificial intelligence tools in order to protect society from potential risks.
