China breaks a cryptographic key with quantum computing

Researchers from Shanghai factored an RSA security key using a quantum machine, raising doubts about the future protection of data.
A report from June 24 explains that researchers from Shanghai University have managed to break down a 22-bit RSA key. This meant breaking a widely used encryption system to protect sensitive data, such as banking transactions or digital communications.

Although 22 bits is a modest length compared to the 2,048-bit RSA keys used in practice, the success of Shanghai University suggests a step forward in the application of quantum technologies.

The length of the broken key was 22 bits, much shorter than the traditional 2,048.
Bitcoin does not use RSA, but quantum advancements question the need to secure the network.
