Tornado Cash founder faces funding shortfall, calls on crypto community to donate for his legal defense Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm is facing a funding shortfall, and he has made a call within the crypto community and among privacy advocates to raise funds in the coming weeks to support his legal defense and the fight for privacy tools. Storm stated that due to the complexity of legal arguments, the originally scheduled hearing on July 14 could be extended by 3-4 weeks, leading to a surge in related costs. He urgently needs to raise $500,000 in the next few days and a total of $1.5 million within weeks to cover legal expenses. His defense is not just for himself, but also to defend the freedom of expression of code, protect software development, and resist government overreach that could threaten everyone. In this battle for our freedom, every contribution is vital. The backdrop is that the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash in August 2022, accusing it of failing to effectively prevent malicious actors (including North Korea's Lazarus Group) from using the protocol for money laundering, with amounts involved reaching $455 million. After the sanctions were imposed, Storm and his developer Alexey Pertsev were detained. Pertsev has been convicted of money laundering in the Netherlands and is currently appealing; Storm is charged in the U.S. with conspiracy to commit money laundering, violating sanctions, and operating an unlicensed money transfer business, among other charges. Although he has been released on bail, if convicted, he could face up to 45 years in prison, and his trial date has been postponed twice for various reasons. The crypto community quickly responded to Storm's fundraising appeal. The Golem Foundation was the first to donate 50 ETH (approximately $150,000), and Meta Cartel DAO generously contributed all its treasury funds. Previously, Paradigm had also generously donated over a million dollars to support legal defense. In addition, the DeFi Education Fund had joined several industry leaders in writing to the White House, stating that holding developers accountable for third-party use of code would severely hinder technological innovation. As of now, Storm's legal defense fund has raised $2.12 million, achieving 61% of its $3.5 million goal for the legal defense fund. This shows that despite facing severe challenges, the support for privacy and open-source software is still gathering strength. #TornadoCash #隐私权诉讼 #行业众筹 #代码自由
