In an article published by Chris Brennan on USA Today on January 26, 2025, he asked the question:
Is Trump Coin Just Another Cryptocurrency Heist?
Andy Baehr, the managing director of CoinDesk, responded:
Meme coins are “clearly and patently frivolous” with “no utility.” CoinDesk is a website that reports on and indexes crypto products.
Trump Coin — known as
$TRUMP — looks like a flashy baseball card with his image, the words “killer, killer, killer” and his signature. People have been paying a wildly volatile range for the odd digital memento in the past week, from about $6.50 the evening it was released to nearly $73 the day before Trump’s inauguration. The price had dropped to the low $30s by Friday afternoon.
I think of it as “pulling up the rug.” It means quickly cashing out on a coin and then walking or running away. Which means your investment keeps sinking and you can't do anything.
So all investors should be more careful about this coin..
