China Begins Assembling a Supercomputer in Space
On May 14, 2025, China launched the first 12 satellites as part of the "Three-Body Computing Constellation" project, marking the first step toward building a supercomputer in space.
The project aims to launch 2,800 satellites, each equipped with advanced artificial intelligence chips capable of performing 744 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
The total capacity of the first 12 satellites reached about 5 peta operations per second (POPS), with the network expected to achieve an astonishing power of 1,000 POPS upon completion.
The satellites communicate with each other via laser links at a speed of 100 gigabits per second and share storage of up to 30 terabytes.
Each satellite operates on an artificial intelligence model containing 8 billion parameters, capable of analyzing satellite images and climate data, and creating 3D digital models of cities.
The satellites also carry devices such as X-ray detectors to study cosmic phenomena like gamma-ray bursts, and they may also be used for disaster response.
