Main Takeaways
Binance is known for its hardcore work culture.
In this article, we unpack the meaning of hardcore in the context of Binance’s culture and look at how it works in unison with our other values.
Let’s face it, this isn’t for everyone.
Binance exists to increase the freedom of money around the world. Every Binancian wakes up and comes to work singularly focused on this vision. This is a huge undertaking, and in order to change the world this way, you need employees who are truly hardcore.
What Is Hardcore?
Binance has always been transparent about the intensity of our workplace, which is a direct result of our laser focus on users. We roll up our sleeves and tackle problems head-on. Doing this in multiple markets around the globe and around the clock takes a certain mindset that not everyone possesses. In this article, we explained what life looks like as a Binance employee. It’s a hardcore environment, and there’s never a dull moment here.
To excel at Binance, one must adapt swiftly to internal dynamics and a challenging external environment. This also means being able to thrive in a chaotic setting. After all, a Binance employee’s day-to-day responsibilities will never be defined in a typical “corporate” way. Being comfortable with internal team rotations and navigating ambiguity while still always delivering for our users is the key quality that people must have to thrive at Binance.
Someone looking for a slow-paced, predictable 9-to-5 job would be massively disappointed here – and probably won’t last long.
So, Why Does It Work?
Why, then, does this type of culture work, and why do many Binance people thrive in this environment? The simple answer is that, while being hardcore is perhaps what we’re best known for, our other Core Values ensure a balanced environment that makes a career at Binance fulfilling. It’s true that we have to be adaptable and have the ability to thrive in times of turbulence, but it’s equally true that Binance provides a level of freedom that employees rarely get to experience in the corporate world.
Freedom
Every Binance employee is treated like an adult. They own their wins and their losses. What we’ve observed in many corporate cultures is that complex hierarchies and closely managed teams can stifle creativity and growth.
Binance allows its people to experiment, try out new concepts and methods, and fail fast to learn fast – as long as everyone is being responsible, user-focused, and keeps our core vision top of mind. Employees can start and own new projects, challenge the status quo, and find new ways to improve our platforms. We encourage this actively, and this level of freedom helps us attract the best and the brightest.
Collaboration
Silos are taboo at Binance. Our departments, functions, and business units can never work in silos – the system is designed such that it would just collapse if this happened. That’s why in Binance, we see employees rotate between departments, and we constantly see internal cross-team partnerships on critical projects.
There’s little patience for ego or politics here – everyone shows up together and works together.
User-focused
Every business is focused on its customers, so our core value of being user-focused isn’t a novel concept. However, when you combine our hardcore attitude with being user-focused, you end up looking at things a bit differently.
Our drive to serve our users in the best way possible is tangible: it explains why so much of our teams are dedicated to customer service and so much of the Product team’s time is spent gathering user feedback. There’s a target to achieve one product enhancement or improvement every single day at Binance.
Humility
The question we asked at the beginning of this post was: Why does our hardcore culture work? We believe that humility also plays a key role here. Open and direct feedback is the norm here, and leaders like CZ aren’t exempt.
When anyone can leave open feedback to the company's CEO – after which we see him actually learning and taking in the suggestions – it encourages all employees to be humble.
Final Thoughts
In some contexts, being called hardcore can have a negative connotation: being too hardcore can be too extreme. But the reality is that it’s just one component of who we are. When hardcore is enhanced and balanced by other values like being user-focused, collaborative, driving freedom, and showing humility, the resulting combination is really powerful.
