A Beginner’s Hope, A Stranger’s Trap

Mahmoud (name changed for privacy), was just beginning to explore the world of cryptocurrency.

A 29-year-old from Pakistan, he had recently opened his first Binance account, eager to take a step toward financial independence. Like many new users across emerging markets, he saw crypto as an opportunity, not just for investment, but for learning, growth, and a better future.

“I didn’t know how to trade,” he admitted. “But I wanted to learn.”

With little prior experience and no formal financial education, Mahmoud turned to online advice. That’s where he found someone – or rather, someone found him.

The man messaged him on Facebook, offering mentorship and profit-sharing. He spoke the language of opportunity, claiming years of expertise in crypto futures and boasting an impressive 90% success rate on his "signals." He wasn’t selling a get-rich-quick scheme; he was selling proven guidance, he reassured.

Mahmoud believed him.

“He guided me through everything,” he said. “I thought he was helping me.”

Signals of Deception

Mahmoud was offered a simple scheme that was easy to understand. The “mentor” would provide trading signals and share profits 50/50 with him. As a newcomer to Binance, Mahmoud had no reason to doubt him.

“He guided me to purchase USDT using P2P,” Mahmoud explained. “Step by step, I followed his instructions and successfully purchased more than $8,000 worth of crypto.”

The stranger then invited him to join a "futures trading" venture, promising profits using his proven strategies.

“He told me he was very experienced,” Mahmoud said. “His signals were accurate, and he had many successful trades.”

At this point, the scammer suggested a new move. He asked Mahmoud to join another exchange platform called QX Trade, offering a 70% starter bonus. The trader then sent Mahmoud a Binance ID that he claimed to belong to the QX Trade platform.

The ID even had a customized nickname that made it look official: "QX Trade."

Mahmoud hesitated.

“I didn’t trust it. I told him I preferred to trade on Binance,” he said.

But the scammer was persistent, insisting that Binance had restrictions, and QX Trade would allow more flexible trading. Eventually, Mahmoud gave in. He created an account on QX and sent all his USDT to the provided Binance ID.

Moments later, everything changed.

When It All Came Crashing Down

As soon as the transfer was complete, Mahmoud was blocked. The mentor who had offered him help vanished and cut off all contact.

The reality sank in: the ID didn’t belong to QX Trade exchange. It was a personal account controlled by the scammer. QX Trade didn’t exist.

But instead of freezing in despair, Mahmoud acted. Within 30 minutes, he filed a report with Binance Support.

Racing Against Time

The scammer, realizing Binance had been alerted, made another attempt to manipulate the situation.

“He begged me to contact Binance and tell them I had sent the money deliberately,” Mahmoud said. “The audacity of this person! He wanted me to lie. He thought he had an emotional hold on me”

But this time, Mahmoud stood his ground. With the report logged and evidence submitted, Binance’s security team moved quickly.

Using internal tools and identity verification processes, they froze the scammer’s account before the funds could be laundered or withdrawn. After completing their investigation, Binance returned the stolen USDT to Mahmoud.

“Several thousand U.S. dollars is not a small amount for me,” he said. “I can’t describe how I felt. I am so thankful.”

A Scam Network on the Hunt

Mahmoud wasn’t content to simply move on. He wanted answers.

He attempted to trace the scammer’s location. Though the man had claimed to live in Islamabad, Mahmoud discovered signs pointing to Multan, another major city of Pakistan.

He filed a complaint with Pakistan’s federal investigation unit. Authorities informed him that the scammer was part of a larger network targeting beginner traders on social media platforms. This gang has been on the wanted list for some time for conning a substantial number of people.

Eventually, the scammer contacted Mahmoud again to ask him to forgive his deception.

“He said: ‘Please forgive me. Withdraw your complaint from the federal investigation.”

Mahmoud shook his head, “Can you believe the shamelessness of this scammer?” He reiterated how grateful he was that Binance was able to recover his scammed funds so quickly.

Now that he has done his part to report the criminal, he is gladly moving on with his life, having learned a lot from the experience.

From Victim to Advocate

For Mahmoud, the experience wasn’t just financial. It was emotional.

“I have no words to describe my feelings when you recovered my funds,” he said to a Binance representative. “I’m thankful from the core of my heart. God bless you and your team.”

The recovery gave him more than just money. It gave him courage. Before this incident, Mahmoud knew little about scams or how they worked. Since then, he’s taken it upon himself to learn more – and to educate others. He has shared his story with family and friends and cautioned them against trusting any stranger online.

His advice to others is clear:

“Never trust anyone on social media. If someone promises you high profits, stop. Learn first. Ask questions. Do not trade with people you don’t know.”

Strength in Sharing

At Binance, we believe stories like Mahmoud’s matter. Because scams thrive in silence – but awareness changes everything.

Mahmoud’s quick thinking, refusal to yield to the scammer, and willingness to speak up allowed our team to take fast action. We were able to recover the full amount and prevent the scammer from targeting others.

However, keep in mind that scam refunds are never guaranteed. This is why Binance puts a strong emphasis on scam prevention and launches multiple campaigns to educate all users on how they can best protect themselves against scams. As the old saying goes, prevention is always better than cure.
