Nvidia is entering the world of autonomous mobility with an ambitious plan—to become the technological core of robotaxi services set to roll out within three years. The company announced that it will supply chips and autonomous driving software to robotaxi operators, significantly expanding its presence beyond gaming and AI hardware.
Just 1% of Revenue—For Now
Nvidia’s automotive division currently makes up a small portion of its revenue—only $592 million in the quarter ending in October, around 1% of total sales. But that may soon change. The company has partnered with Uber and Mercedes-Benz to launch a series of test drives.
Test Ride in San Francisco: Self-Driving Mercedes Handles 90% of the Route Alone
In a recent test drive through the challenging traffic of San Francisco, a 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA equipped with Nvidia's system demonstrated its capabilities. A safety driver was present but only had to intervene once—when two buses, delivery vans, and a Waymo vehicle all tried to pass on a narrow street. Otherwise, the car handled hills, traffic lights, and parking with ease.
“Level 2++” Technology: From Parking Lot to Autonomous Navigation
Nvidia calls its system "Level 2 Plus Plus," putting it on par with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving. The first Mercedes models will include lane-keeping, assisted lane changes, and eventually hands-free highway driving. The ultimate goal is “park-to-park” navigation—full autonomy from one parking space to another.
Two Brains in One Car: Main AI + Backup Safety System
To ensure safety, the Drive system uses two separate computing units. The primary system relies on AI and computer vision, while a backup operates using fixed rules (e.g., always stop at stop signs) and takes control when the main computer is uncertain.
What’s Next?
By 2028, Nvidia aims to offer full autonomy to everyday drivers. Future vehicles should even respond to voice commands using generative AI. As division head Wu says: “With transformers and generative AI, we can do much more.”
