Gold Prices Keep Falling After Worst Loss In 12 Years; These ETFs, Miners Extend Losses
After gold's worst day in 12 years, the precious metal and related ETFs and stocks continued to slide early Wednesday.
Gold futures were down 2.2% after tumbling 5.7% on Tuesday, their worst daily drop since April 2013. That's after hitting a record $4,382 on Monday.
SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell more than 6% in Tuesday's stock market. VanEck Gold Miners (GDX), VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) and Sprott Gold Miners ETF (SGDM) all sank around 10% on Tuesday.
GLD fell 1.5% early Wednesday while the mining ETFs were off roughly 4%.
As for individual miners and related stocks, Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM), AngloGold Ashanti (AU), Newmont (NEM) and Orla Mining (ORLA) showed similar declines on Tuesday and early Wednesday.
Tuesday's sell-off in gold prices and stocks comes amid a strengthening U.S. dollar and optimism over easing U.S. China trade tensions. Donald Trump and China are scheduled to meet next week to address tariff disputes.
Analysts Ewa Manthey and Warren Patterson at investment bank ING wrote Wednesday that the "catalyst appears to be profit-taking in a market that has been hugely overbought in recent weeks."
