Coinbase Asset Management Affirms Bitcoin and Ethereum as Mandatory Portfolio Foundations

Anthony Bassili, President of Coinbase Asset Management, asserts that institutional investors have reached a clear consensus on the two most critical assets in cryptocurrency: Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). These two are universally viewed as "mandatory foundations" for any serious digital asset portfolio.

Bassili's perspective highlights the market's maturity, where BTC is cemented as the digital store of value with deep liquidity, and ETH is recognized as the essential infrastructure for decentralized finance (DeFi) and the broader web3 ecosystem. This dual recognition means that for large funds and institutions, portfolio construction begins with these two assets.

While the top tier is solidified, the competition begins immediately after. Bassili notes that Solana has emerged as the most likely candidate for the third foundational slot, having captured significant investor interest due to its technical performance and growing ecosystem. However, a vast chasm exists after Solana, suggesting investors are highly selective and require clear utility before committing to the next tier of assets.
