When dealing with a complex lending platform, the most confusing part is usually, "Who is actually deciding which assets are safe to borrow against?" The Morpho Blue Foundation
Morpho Blue is the immutable, trustless foundation for lending. It allows anyone to create a market, but these markets are incredibly simple: they only allow one specific collateral asset against one specific loan asset, using one specific oracle. The risks are isolated per market.
The Intelligence Layer: MetaMorpho Vaults
The intelligence layer is the MetaMorpho Vault Protocol, which is built on top of Morpho Blue. These vaults are curated pools that intelligently distribute liquidity across multiple Morpho Blue markets, grouping assets together for lenders.
The Role of the Curator
If the vault is the smart management layer, the Curator is the risk manager.
Curators are expert or specialized entities—they might be a DAO, a team of analysts, or a specific financial institution—and they are tasked with defining the complete risk profile for a vault. They control the most crucial parameters:
Collateral Acceptance: Which assets are allowed in the vault.
Loan to Value (LTV) Ratio: How much can be borrowed against the collateral.
Oracle Selection: Which price feed mechanism is used to value the collateral.
Interest Rate Model (IRM): How interest rates are calculated for that specific vault.
This control is what enables risk segmentation.
Why Isolation Matters
In the old model, if a risky asset's collateral broke a global rule, the risk was shared across the entire massive pool. In Morpho Blue, a problem only affects the specific market and the specific vault that chose to use that asset.
When you deposit into a MetaMorpho Vault, you are choosing to trust that specific Curator's expertise and risk parameters. You do not inherit the risk of any other unrelated vault or market, making risk visible, segmentable, and much easier to manage for both individual users and institutions.
