Former Binance CEO Changpeng "CZ" Zhao has issued a stark warning. In a recent post on X, he alerted users to a dangerous wave of phishing attacks targeting popular cryptocurrency information websites. He urged extreme caution when connecting crypto wallets, as scammers are exploiting the trustworthiness of well-known platforms to steal funds.
🎯 Targets: Cointelegraph, CoinMarketCap, and Other Major Crypto Platforms
⚠️ The first victim was Cointelegraph, whose website was compromised on Sunday via a front-end exploit. The hack injected a malicious popup window promoting a fake ICO airdrop for CTG tokens worth up to $5,500. Users were urged to connect their wallets to claim the offer, allegedly backed by a “fair launch” and a fake CertiK audit.
Cointelegraph responded swiftly, warning users:
🛑 “Do not click on these pop-ups, do not connect your wallets, and do not enter any personal information.”

🔐 CoinMarketCap Also Breached
Just two days earlier, CoinMarketCap faced a similar phishing attempt, with hackers injecting a malicious window prompting users to “verify their wallet.” Reports on X noted that MetaMask and Phantom flagged the site as dangerous during the incident.
CoinMarketCap removed the malicious code quickly and launched an ongoing internal investigation to enhance platform security.
🎣 Fake Aave Ads: Phishing Through Google
The phishing campaign has extended beyond crypto websites. Another recent attack spread via fraudulent Google ads mimicking Aave, a major DeFi protocol. These ads appeared at the top of Google search results and redirected users to phishing websites designed to drain connected wallets.
🚨 CZ: Don’t Connect Wallets Without Verifying the Site
CZ warned:
🔒 “Be extremely cautious in this environment. Do not authorize any wallet connections unless you are 100% certain the site is legitimate.”
This wave of attacks demonstrates how phishing is becoming more sophisticated and targeted. As cybercriminals continue to exploit even trusted sources, heightened vigilance is now essential for anyone actively using crypto wallets.
