According to Foresight News, the advent of AI technologies like ChatGPT has significantly reduced the costs associated with software development and business expansion. Qiao Wang, founder of Alliance DAO, shared his experience of using ChatGPT as a programming assistant three years ago, which drastically cut down the time required for tasks. Since then, AI tools have been increasingly adopted by tech founders, boosting productivity by 1.5 to 4 times.

Wang observed that the cost of software development is nearing zero, and other business functions such as marketing, sales, and customer service are also seeing reduced costs. While large companies are already experiencing these benefits, startups that have not yet achieved product-market fit are less affected. However, those that have found their market fit are scaling rapidly with AI assistance.

This shift implies that startups can now grow significantly with minimal funding and personnel. Wang predicts the emergence of unicorn companies founded by a few co-founders with as little as $500,000. Many startups have already achieved substantial revenue with small teams and minimal funding.

Despite these advancements, the question arises: where do startups find their competitive edge? Wang suggests several potential advantages:

1. Proprietary Data: Exclusive customer data or hard-to-access public datasets can provide a defensive edge.

2. Network Effects: While software can be replicated, acquiring a customer base like Facebook or Nasdaq is challenging.

3. Deep Integration: Software deeply integrated into workflows has high switching costs.

4. Ecosystem Lock-In: Platforms with strong developer ecosystems and third-party integrations have high user retention.

5. Regulatory Barriers: AI cannot secure the licenses and relationships needed in highly regulated industries like finance and healthcare.

6. Trust and Brand: Consumers and businesses continue to rely on established brands for critical decisions.

7. Real-World Constraints: Physical infrastructure, robotics, and supply chains present limitations AI cannot bypass.

8. Deep User Insights: While AI can commercialize good ideas, true user understanding requires direct interaction.

For startups yet to find product-market fit, the primary goal remains achieving this fit. However, considering defensive strategies post-fit is more crucial than ever.
