Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has raised a massive $20 billion in new funding to accelerate its artificial intelligence projects — with Nvidia contributing $2 billion as part of the equity package.
According to Bloomberg, the new round combines equity and debt financing and is closely tied to xAI’s plan to use Nvidia GPUs for its new Colossus 2 data center in Memphis — the company’s largest facility to date.

A structured deal that minimizes risk
The financing package consists of roughly $7.5 billion in equity and up to $12.5 billion in debt. The deal is structured through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that purchases Nvidia chips and leases them back to xAI over a five-year term. This model allows investors to recover their funds without being directly exposed to company-wide risk.
Neither Nvidia nor xAI have commented publicly on the transaction. Interestingly, Musk claimed on X back in September that the company was “not currently raising capital,” though this round clearly proves otherwise.

Nvidia strengthens its position in the AI race
Nvidia’s investment in xAI’s equity is part of its broader strategy to integrate its chips deeper into key client ecosystems. Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress stated that, in addition to stock buybacks and strategic acquisitions, Nvidia’s main use of cash will be to “help accelerate AI adoption across industries.”
The debt portion of the funding is backed by major financiers, including Apollo Global Management, Diameter Capital Partners, and Valor Capital, which is also managing the equity portion.

Funding doubles original expectations
Initially, xAI was expected to raise around $10 billion — but the final $20 billion round highlights the surging demand for AI hardware and investor enthusiasm for large-scale infrastructure projects.
Notably, the debt is secured by Nvidia processors rather than xAI’s corporate assets. By leasing the chips for a fixed period, investors gain predictable returns, while xAI maintains financial flexibility without overleveraging.
Analysts view this setup as a potential blueprint for other tech companies seeking to raise capital for AI infrastructure without taking on excessive debt or diluting ownership.

The AI sector sees a funding explosion
Musk’s deal comes amid an unprecedented wave of capital inflows into the AI industry.

Bloomberg reports that xAI currently spends around $1 billion per month building out its infrastructure. Earlier this year, it raised another $10 billion through a mix of equity and debt financing.
Musk is also leveraging his other companies — including SpaceX, which has already invested in xAI. Later this year, Tesla shareholders are set to vote on whether the automaker will also join the investment round.

Artificial intelligence at the heart of Musk’s vision
Data center capacity remains one of the biggest bottlenecks in the AI arms race. Training massive models demands enormous computing power, which Musk sees as the core of his product ecosystem.
He describes AI as the foundation for self-driving vehicles, humanoid robots, and an entirely new generation of intelligent systems that will connect his companies — from Tesla to Neuralink and xAI itself.

xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, is entering a new phase of rapid growth. According to the Financial Times, Musk has appointed Anthony Armstrong, a former investment banker at Morgan Stanley, as the company’s new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
