Tensions between the U.S., India, and Russia are escalating again after Donald Trump publicly criticized the strengthening alliance between New Delhi and Moscow. The former U.S. president, who made it clear he's done sugarcoating his words, labeled both economies as ādeadā and bluntly stated he doesn't care where their cooperation leads.
āI donāt care what India does with Russia. Let their dead economies destroy each other ā it doesnāt bother me one bit,ā Trump wrote on Truth Social.
25% Tariff on Indian Imports and Warning About Russian Reliance
Trumpās statement came just a day before the U.S. introduced a new 25% tariff on Indian goods. He also pointed out Indiaās long-standing reliance on Russia for weapons and energy, calling it a strategic mistake.
According to Reuters, Trump stated that the U.S. trades very little with India and almost not at all with Russia ā a clear message of dissatisfaction, not only with how they conduct trade but also with their choice of trading partners.
India Responds: We Will Protect Farmers and Small Businesses
India was quick to respond. Through its Ministry of Commerce and Industry, it released a statement acknowledging the U.S. move and said it is āstudying the implications.ā
The ministry emphasized that India will take āall necessary steps to safeguard our national interests,ā especially those of local farmers, entrepreneurs, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
āIndia and the U.S. have been negotiating a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial bilateral trade deal in recent months. We remain committed to that goal,ā the ministry said.
New Delhi also highlighted its recent free trade agreement with the UK as proof that India is not against global partnerships ā but not at the expense of its domestic economy.
Trump Pressures Putin, Slams Medvedev, and Shortens Peace Deadline
Trumpās criticism wasnāt limited to India. He also took aim at Russia, reacting to comments made by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev ā now deputy chairman of the countryās Security Council.
Medvedev posted on Twitter (X) that Trump is playing an āultimate gameā with Moscow and warned that āeach new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war ā not just between Russia and Ukraine, but potentially with Trumpās own country.ā
Trump expressed disappointment with Russian president Vladimir Putin for not ending the war in Ukraine and said that while the original peace deadline was 50 days, he is now shortening it to ā10 or 12 days.ā It wasnāt entirely clear what this meant, but Trump believes Moscow is wasting time and that heās not willing to wait much longer.
India Keeps Buying Russian Oil, Accuses Europe of Hypocrisy
Despite Western pressure, India continues to buy oil from Russia. Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar defended the move, saying the country is simply trying to secure the best prices for its people.
He also pointed out what he called hypocrisy from Europe:
āEuropeās problems are the worldās problems ā but the worldās problems are not Europeās problems.ā
š One-Minute Summary:
Trump launched a new offensive against India and Russia, calling them economically weak and distancing the U.S. from any serious trade engagement with either country. India, while defending its farmers and small businesses, continues purchasing oil from Russia, and Trump is tightening the pressure on Moscow by shortening his timeline for peace in Ukraine.
Geopolitical tensions are rising once again among the world's key players. Do you think Trumpās hardline stance will escalate the trade war between the U.S. and the Global South?
