OpenAI has recently unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model – GPT-5, which it calls its most advanced system to date. The company promises enhanced speed, accuracy, and usefulness, along with improved reasoning capabilities that are said to surpass competing models.
GPT-5 Available to Everyone: Free and via API
The new model is accessible to the general public – not just paid users, but also those using the free version of ChatGPT. Several variants are available for different use cases, such as GPT-5-mini, GPT-5-nano, and GPT-5-chat, making deployment more flexible across various applications.
What Sets GPT-5 Apart?
According to OpenAI, GPT-5 has a significantly lower hallucination rate – meaning it fabricates answers less often. Its development included over 5,000 hours of testing to ensure safety and reliability. One notable feature is the “safe completion” mechanism: instead of refusing to answer risky questions, GPT-5 offers high-level responses that remain within strict safety limits.
During the launch presentation, OpenAI demonstrated the model’s practical skills. It was asked to create a compelling web app to help English speakers learn French. Within seconds, GPT-5 generated two entirely different applications featuring interactive flashcards, quizzes, and progress tracking.
While the apps weren't perfect, users can continue to edit them – changing themes, adding new features, or tweaking layouts.
Early Testing Shows Impressive Results
For instance, enterprise file management company Box tested GPT-5 on diverse data sets. Its CEO Aaron Levie described the model as a major leap forward in AI and highlighted that GPT-5 succeeded where many other systems had failed.
Musk: Grok 4 Still Has the Edge
Despite the excitement around GPT-5, Elon Musk believes Grok 4 – developed by his company xAI – still holds the upper hand. According to Musk and experts like François Chollet (creator of ARC-AGI), Grok 4 outperforms GPT-5 in general intelligence benchmarks, especially on the ARC-AGI framework.
Musk also revealed that Grok 5 is on track to launch by the end of the year, promising even greater performance.
Microsoft Embraces GPT-5
On the same day GPT-5 was released, Microsoft announced its integration into a range of its products. The model now powers tools like Microsoft 365, Azure, and Teams, providing advanced AI features to users without the need for manual setup.
Subscribers of Microsoft Copilot – both consumer and enterprise versions – automatically gain access to GPT-5, as do developers across Microsoft’s platforms.
Security at a New Level
Microsoft stated that GPT-5 has one of the strongest safety profiles of any AI model so far. It has been tested against various threats, including malware creation and automated scams, and has shown strong resistance to misuse.
