According to insider reports, Ubisoft has quietly canceled one of its most promising upcoming titles — an Assassin’s Creed game set in post–Civil War America. The reason? The subject matter was deemed too explosive.
Sources say the story was to take place during the Reconstruction era after 1865, when the United States struggled to heal from the brutal conflict and reunite a divided nation. The main protagonist was reportedly a former slave who moved west to start a new life — only to be drawn into the Brotherhood of Assassins and sent back south to confront racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
It sounded powerful and daring. And that was exactly the problem.

Politics That Killed a Game
According to Game File sources, Ubisoft halted development in 2024, fearing the title might ignite tensions in an already divided America.

“It was too political a theme in too unstable a country,” one developer told the outlet.
The project was still in the early concept phase, years away from release, but the company decided to pull the plug — partly due to the backlash surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the most recent entry in the franchise.

Fallout From Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Shadows, set in feudal Japan, featured two protagonists: the African samurai Yasuke and the Japanese ninja Naoe. Though praised for creativity, the game sparked online outrage from critics who accused Ubisoft of “rewriting history” and “pushing a DEI agenda.”
Developers defended their work. “If there’s any hill we’re willing to die on, it’s the defense of our teams’ creative freedom,” said series producer Marc-Alexis Côté.

CEO Yves Guillemot added that Ubisoft “is not pushing any particular agenda,” emphasizing that the company simply wants to create games everyone can enjoy.
Still, the controversy clearly left its mark — and Ubisoft’s leadership decided to play it safe.

After canceling the Civil War–era project, Ubisoft redirected its efforts toward restructuring under its new creative hub, Vantage Studios, aiming for more unified creative leadership and fewer controversies.
Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Shadows received its first expansion, Claws of Awaji, on September 16 — but reviews were mixed. Players praised the setting yet criticized the DLC’s short length and high price.
