According to Deep Tide TechFlow, on June 6, Japan and the United States began the latest round of trade negotiations. The Japanese delegation committed to producing more cars in the U.S. and strengthening cooperation in the rare earth sector to seek exemptions from U.S. tariffs. On Thursday, Japan's trade negotiation representative, Akizawa Ryo, met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo in Washington to discuss non-tariff barriers, expanding trade, and economic security cooperation, among other issues. The Japanese Cabinet Secretariat stated that Akizawa Ryo is expected to return to Japan on Sunday after concluding discussions before the G7 summit. Shigeru Ishiba had two phone talks with Trump and may announce an agreement during the summit. Japan proposed mechanisms to increase car production in the U.S., increase the number of vehicles exported to the U.S., and proportionally reduce the 25% car tariff. Japan hopes the U.S. will eliminate tariffs but views a reduction in the tax rate as an alternative option.
