According to Cointelegraph, the Ethereum Foundation announced a donation of $500,000 for the legal defense of Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm, and will match an additional $750,000 donated by the crypto community. Storm faces charges of unauthorized funds transfer, money laundering, and violating U.S. sanctions, and is expected to be tried in New York on July 14. Storm's lawyer had requested to dismiss the case, as the judge ruled that the U.S. Treasury exceeded its authority in sanctioning the mixer’s smart contracts. Storm stated that if he loses, DeFi will perish with him. Another developer, Roman Semenov, is still at large and may be hiding in Russia. Alexey Pertsev was arrested in the Netherlands and sentenced to five years in prison.
