North Korean Hacker Organization Steals $28.37 Billion in Cryptocurrency, $16.45 Billion Stolen in the First Nine Months of 2025
According to ChainCatcher, the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT) released a report stating that from January 2024 to September 2025, North Korean hacker organizations stole at least $28.37 billion in cryptocurrency through attacks on global exchanges, with $16.45 billion stolen in the first nine months of 2025.
The report points out that North Korea is laundering money through intermediaries based in Russia, Hong Kong, and Cambodia, and using platforms under the 'Huiwang Group' to convert cryptocurrency into cash. North Korea is also collaborating with Russian ransomware groups, using AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance the stealth of their attacks. In addition, there are about 1,000 to 2,000 IT personnel from North Korea working remotely under false identities in multiple countries, sending their salaries back to North Korea to fund nuclear weapons and missile programs.
