Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major cryptocurrencies climbed on Wednesday, October 1, even as the U.S. government shut down, while gold reached another record high on political uncertainty.

Bitcoin surged past $118,000 for the first time since August, trading near $118,010 and gaining about 4.5% on the day. Ethereum also saw strong momentum, rising 5.5% to $4,337. Other top performers included Solana, up 6.8% at $219, BNB gaining 2.5% to $1,019, and TRON advancing 2% to $0.34.

XRP added 4.3% to $2.94 after news that Ripple’s longtime chief technology officer, David Schwartz, will step down by the end of the year.

Outside the top ten, pumpfun’s PUMP token jumped nearly 26% to $0.006, while Zcash climbed 23% to $90.

Overall, the crypto market capitalization rose to $4.12 trillion, an increase of 4.3% in a single day. Bitcoin’s share of the market stood at about 57%, with Ethereum holding 12.6%.

Wave of Liquidations

Data from Coinglass showed that nearly $574 million in crypto positions were liquidated within 24 hours. Short sellers took the biggest hit, with almost $430 million wiped out, compared to $144 million in long positions. Bitcoin accounted for $184 million of these liquidations, followed by Ethereum at $141 million. Altcoins made up roughly $50 million.

Meanwhile, spot Bitcoin ETFs saw close to $522 million in inflows on September 30, marking the second straight day of positive flows. Ethereum ETFs brought in about $127 million over the same period.

The rally came just after the U.S. government shut down when Democrats rejected a Republican funding plan that lacked healthcare provisions. While crypto markets have so far reacted positively, analysts warn that extended political uncertainty could pressure risk assets in the coming weeks.

John Glover, CIO of Ledn, pointed out that past shutdowns have only caused short-lived downturns in financial markets, often followed by quick rebounds. He suggested that any weakness in digital assets during this period could be viewed as a buying opportunity.

“Trump has previously allowed shutdowns during his first term, using them as leverage in negotiations,” Glover noted. “In both cases, markets initially sold off but recovered quickly. Given Republican control of both the House and Senate, the risk of a long shutdown seems lower than in past instances.
