Polygon is upgrading its entire ecosystem with Polygon 2.0, and a big part of that upgrade is the new POL token. POL replaces MATIC as the native token of the Polygon network. The good news is that the migration is simple, safe and one to one meaning you will not lose any value when you switch from MATIC to POL.

Here I explains how the migration works, what steps you need to take and what changes after the swap.

Why the Switch from MATIC to POL?

MATIC has powered Polygon for years, but it was designed mainly for one network the Polygon PoS chain. Now Polygon 2.0 introduces a multi chain system with many Layer 2 blockchains connected through AgLayer.

To support this new structure a more advanced token was needed one that can secure multiple chains, handle governance and fund the ecosystem. That’s why POL was created.

POL brings more utility, scalability and flexibility than MATIC.

1:1 Token Migration.

The swap from MATIC to POL happens at a 1:1 ratio.

For every 1 MATIC you hold, you will receive 1 POL.

No value is lost. Your total holdings will remain the same only the token name and contract change.

Where and How to Migrate ?

Polygon will make migration available through official tools and major exchanges. There will be no time limit so you can swap whenever you want.

Here’s how it will work:

1. Automatic exchange migration.

Most major exchanges (like Binance, Coinbase and others) will automatically convert your MATIC into POL once migration starts.

2. Manual wallet migration.

If you hold MATIC in a wallet like MetaMask or Trust Wallet, you can use the official Polygon migration smart contract. You’ll simply connect your wallet, confirm the swap and receive POL instantly.

Always use only official Polygon links and avoid third party or fake websites.

What Happens to Old MATIC?

Once you migrate to POL your MATIC tokens are replaced and removed from circulation. MATIC will slowly phase out as POL becomes the new standard across Polygon 2.0.

If you choose not to migrate right away your MATIC will still hold value until the transition is complete.

Benefits of Holding POL .

Staking; Earn rewards by securing multiple Polygon chains.

Governance: Vote on network upgrades and treasury funding.

Multi chain utility: POL works across all Polygon 2.0 chains.

Long-term growth: POL supports Polygon’s vision to become the Value Layer of the Internet.

Conclusion:

The migration from MATIC to POL is easy, safe and built for the future. You don’t lose tokens or value and you gain more features and earning opportunities. POL is the next evolution of MATIC ready to power the entire Polygon 2.0 ecosystem and the next generation of Web3.
