El Salvador Allows Bitcoin Investment Banks
A historic Investment Banking Law in El Salvador authorizes licensed investment banks, not commercial lenders, to store Bitcoin and other digital assets. These institutions will serve sophisticated investors and must have a Digital Asset Service Provider license and $50 million in beginning capital.
The Thursday bill allows banks to function only as Bitcoin banks. Government officials hope the framework will attract international investment and solidify the country's crypto financial center reputation. Critics worry that affluent institutions may gain more than Salvadorans.
This comes as Japan's Bitcoin ETF market entrance is delayed. Japan has no Spot Bitcoin ETF, but US-based ones are gaining popularity and El Salvador is moving ahead.
Japanese SBI Holdings filed for spot crypto ETFs this week, according to several sources. The business emphasized that it has not applied for crypto-related ETFs. In its Q2 2025 financial release, the business said it will issue crypto-asset-linked investment trusts and ETFs after regulatory permission.
Over $116 Million From Harvard To Bitcoin ETF
Harvard University invested $116.6 million in BlackRock's IBIT spot Bitcoin ETF, boosting institutional trust in Bitcoin.
Harvard's equity portfolio now includes Bitcoin, a significant move after its prior quarter decision to reduce exposure to many large Big Tech corporations. The statement states that the endowment bought 1.9 million iShares Bitcoin Trust shares for $116.6 million.
Since their inception in early 2024, US spot Bitcoin ETFs have garnered over $54 billion in inflows, matching Harvard's commitment.
