In a stunning twist, Donald Trump publicly ruled out the possibility of Scott Bessent — his own Treasury Secretary — becoming the next Federal Reserve Chair, just hours after Bessent himself told Bloomberg TV he’d “love to do it” if asked.
🎬 From front-runner to sidelined in a matter of hours. Speaking to reporters, Trump was blunt: “Scott’s not at the top of my list. I like the job he’s doing now.”
Bessent's Bold Strike Against Powell
Earlier that day, Bessent appeared on Bloomberg TV, sharply criticizing current Fed Chair Jerome Powell. He argued Powell should fully step down after his term ends in May 2026, warning that a “shadow Fed chair” would only confuse the markets.
Legally, Powell can remain on the Fed board until January 2028, but Trump has no interest in waiting. “I think he’s a total fool,” Trump told reporters, adding that Powell’s expensive renovation of the Fed headquarters was “pretty disgraceful” and potentially grounds for dismissal.
Powell denies the accusations and has called for an internal investigation. But Trump appears to have made up his mind: he wants someone else — someone ready to cut interest rates.
Hassett vs. Warsh – A Reality Show-Style Contest?
Trump is now reportedly focusing on two names: Kevin Hassett and Kevin Warsh. One White House insider even described the selection as an “Apprentice-style” contest — a nod to Trump’s reality TV background.
🔹 Hassett, head of the National Economic Council, has transformed from a neutral economist into a MAGA loyalist. He frequently echoes Trump’s views on inflation, interest rates, and tariffs in media appearances.
🔹 Warsh, a former Fed governor, remains less visible but is still considered a serious contender. Trump is said to respect his experience.
Meanwhile, Bessent — who earlier in the day spoke of a “formal selection process” and “presidential pace” — has now been cast aside. His “I’d love to do it” moment is just a footnote. Trump slammed the door shut before Bessent even had the chance to walk through it.
