Tether will discontinue USDT on five blockchains by September 1, 2025, including Omni, SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand.
The decision follows low usage, limited developer activity, and a shift toward scalable, active blockchain networks.
Ethereum and Tron remain Tether’s primary USDT platforms, with a focus on Layer 2 and high-performance protocols.
Tether has confirmed that it will discontinue USDt (USDT) operations on five blockchains starting September 1, 2025.Confirmed by a Wu Blockchain post on X, the affected networks include Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand.

This decision follows an internal assessment focused on blockchain usage, developer engagement, and infrastructure performance. Tether intends to reallocate resources to platforms that offer stronger scalability and active community participation.
Shift to Scalable and Active Networks
The company explained that the termination aligns with long-standing plans to streamline USDT operations. CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that removing support for less active networks would help focus on blockchains showing more development and community interaction. USDT issuance and redemptions have already stopped on some chains over the past two years.
For instance, minting ceased on Omni, Kusama, and Bitcoin Cash SLP in August 2023. By June 2024, the company will end new token issuance on EOS and Algorand. The final phase of this transition will involve freezing USDT tokens on these five blockchains and halting all redemptions.
Omni and SLP to Be Phased Out
Omni Layer, the original launch platform for USDT, will see its operations formally concluded. Tether had issued $888 million on Omni since its inception. However, only $82.9 million remains in circulation. Declining transaction volumes and competition from newer Layer 2 solutions have impacted its relevance.
Bitcoin Cash SLP also faces discontinuation. This network saw only $986,500 in USDT usage from an earlier total of $5 million. The company noted a significant lack of developer activity and user adoption. Tether ended minting on the network earlier and will now end redemptions permanently.
Kusama, EOS, and Algorand Near Shutdown
Kusama, once considered a testbed for Polkadot projects, has seen its USDT activity drop below Tether’s thresholds. Around $240,000 remains in circulation out of a total issuance of $3.5 million. Tether stated that the network no longer aligns with operational priorities.
EOS, which issued $85 million in USDT historically, now holds less than $4.2 million in circulation. Algorand also reports under $1 million in active USDT, with USDC leading stablecoin usage on its chain. Tether had previously given Algorand users one year to redeem holdings after stopping issuance in 2023.
The company confirmed that Ethereum and Tron remain primary issuance platforms for USDT. These chains account for the majority of USDT’s $139.4 billion market capitalization. Tether plans to increase support for high-performance protocols and Layer 2 solutions. All users holding USDT on the five discontinued blockchains must complete redemptions before the September 2025 deadline. Tether’s decision reflects a shift toward efficient operations and long-term blockchain growth
