Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is taking proactive steps to secure long-term access to continuous-wave (CW) lasers, a critical component in high-speed optical networking, by placing multiple large-scale purchase orders, according to insights shared by Serenity citing TrendForce.

The move highlights growing concerns over potential supply constraints across the optical communications ecosystem as demand for AI infrastructure accelerates. CW lasers play a vital role in optical transceivers used within data centers, making them increasingly important as cloud providers expand AI computing capacity.

Industry observers note that available independent production capacity within Western supply chains is becoming increasingly scarce. Major suppliers such as SIVE, Applied Optoelectronics, and potentially MACOM are among the few remaining sources with meaningful capacity, while recent multi-year agreements between Nvidia and leading optical component manufacturers have already absorbed significant production resources.

Serenity also pointed to supply challenges affecting Lumentum, which has reportedly faced CW laser shortages and may be turning to Japanese manufacturers, including Sumitomo and Furukawa, for additional supply. However, those suppliers are also believed to be approaching capacity limits amid rising global demand.

With both Nvidia and AMD securing long-term component commitments, competition for optical networking resources could intensify further. Major hyperscale cloud operators, including Amazon and Microsoft, may seek to lock in supply agreements of their own, potentially tightening the market even more.

The developments underscore how the AI boom is extending beyond GPUs and semiconductors, creating new pressure points throughout the broader data center supply chain. As demand for advanced networking hardware continues to surge, access to key optical components may become an increasingly important competitive advantage for technology companies.
