#genius $GENIUS A pattern started bothering me after several days of following Genius Terminal, and it wasn't the one I expected to find.

Over the past couple of weeks, I found myself checking Genius Terminal for a fairly simple reason. I wanted to understand how people were actually using it. So I kept revisiting activity dashboards, comparing community discussions across different days, tracking which conversations resurfaced, and paying attention to what users seemed to return for after their first interaction.

What surprised me wasn't the growth numbers people were discussing. It was how often the same names kept appearing in different places.

At one point, I estimated that maybe 70% of the discussions I followed involved users who were already familiar with the platform rather than completely new participants. On the surface, that sounds limiting. If network effects are real, shouldn't a system become more valuable because new people continuously arrive?

But the more I watched, the more that assumption felt incomplete.

The obvious metric is user growth. The less visible metric is user return. Those are not always the same thing.

I started noticing a subtle tension. Bringing someone into an ecosystem is difficult, but convincing them to build habits around it is even harder. Following updates, checking opportunities, revisiting discussions, and maintaining attention all carry a cost. Most people underestimate how much effort consistency requires.

That observation changed how I think about network effects within Genius. Maybe the strongest networks are not built when people join. Maybe they form when people stop leaving.

I keep returning to a few questions. How much of a network's value comes from participation versus familiarity? When does repeated behavior become commitment? And are network effects really about scale, or are they about reducing the psychological friction of coming back tomorrow?

The more I look at it, the less obvious the answer seems.
